Ten Commandments for a Mother on Welfare

by an Ohio woman on ADC

Printed in Ohio Adequate Welfare News, June 1967

1. Thou shall give thy children what they need--but don't spend over 73¢ a day.

2. Thou shall have furniture--if glue will hold it together.

3. Thou shall live in a real nice house--in the slums.

4. Thou shall clothe thy children--as long as their clothes are rags.

5. Thou shall send they children to school but don't give them any supplies.

6. Thou shall feed thy children--but don't give them meat.

7. Thou shall not buy any underclothes--no one sees them.

8. Thou shall not give they children spending money--let them beg.

9. Thou shall not ride a bus up-town--walk!

10. Thou shall not get sick--just die!
